U.S. Routes as a Subway Map

At long last, I present the latest in my series of transit map-styled designs. This time, we have the U.S. Highway system (that’s U.S. Routes, not to be confused with the newer Interstate Highway system – which as most of you well know, I have already mapped).

New Side Project: Transit Maps Tumblr

Well, it had to happen. I’ve set up a new Tumblr where I discuss, critique and celebrate transit maps from around the world – be they official or unofficial, fantasy or real, from the past, present or future. I’ve already got a great selection up and there’s a lot more to come. Head on over to take a look, and follow me or reblog my stuff  if you like what you see!

Historical Passenger Rail of Portland, Oregon

Somewhat related to my previous post, here’s a new transit map of Portland for your perusal. This piece was born out of two things – a friendly after-work chat with the immensely talented Ryan Sullivan of Paste In Place, where we discussed a concept similar to this; and a chance discovery of a high-resolution scan of a 1943 streetcar/trolley map on the amazing Vintage Oregon site.

Rail Transit of Portland, Oregon

Here’s a new transit diagram that I’ve been working on for a while now – a unified rail transit map for the place I live, Portland, Oregon. Portland is blessed with fantastic public transportation, but I’ve always felt that the official TriMet system diagram fails to fully show this, even after its recent redesign.

Edward Tufte: And I thought I hated PowerPoint…

Today I had the absolute pleasure of attending Edward Tufte’s full-day course, Presenting Data and Information. For those who aren’t aware of Edward’s work, he is one of the foremost experts on data visualization in the world today. His books on the subject matter are amazing – beautifully illustrated and typeset and with concise, intelligent text that delves deep into the subject. If your work involves visualizing data in any way – graphs, charts, diagrams, maps, you name it – then I would definitely recommend any of his books on the subject matter and this course.

Plus ça change, Washington D.C. style

Recently, I entered a friendly contest organised by the Greater Greater Washington website to redesign the Washington, DC Metrorail map. With the recent appointment of the original designer, Lance Wyman, to renew the real map, there’s a lot of interest in this subject at the moment.

E-Road Diagram and TGV Diagram – Posters Now Available

These two diagrams, which I consider to be some of my best work, have never quite raised the same level of interest that my Interstate as Subway and Amtrak as Subway diagrams have. However, I have had a few queries requesting posters, so I have found a way to make them available to people who want them.

If you live in Europe, you can buy these prints from Artflakes. Click on the links below to go to the product page for each poster.

If you live in the US, visit Society6. Click on the links below to go to the product page for each poster.

If you live elsewhere, choose whichever of the two services gives you the best price. Bear in mind that this is single-print, on-demand printing, so the prices are a little higher than my other posters, where I can negotiate a better price for printing in bulk over a long period of time. Also, due to the small type and fine detail in these posters, I strongly recommend that you only purchase the larger sizes available.

SOLD OUT: Washington, D.C. Metro Diagram Posters

In February this year, I set myself the task of redesigning Washington, D.C.’s ubiquitous Metro Map (read my original blog post here). What began as a simple design exercise (mainly to see just how different I could make the diagram look) has grown into something much bigger: my design has appeared on DC blogs and newspapers and has generated a lot of public discussion. Many people have asked for posters, and – finally – here they are.

Now sold out.

New York Life’s “new” logo

I have an old stack of LIFE magazines in a big box at home, ranging from the 1930s all the way through to the early 1970s. As well as being amazing snapshots of the world at the time of publication, they also feature some fantastic old advertisements from America’s “golden age” of advertising.

One ad that particularly caught my eye was this one for the New York Life Insurance Company from November 1964, mainly because it introduces a new logo that is still being used by the company today, some 46 years later.

European E-Road System as a Subway Diagram

Interstate System? Europe laughs at your petty Interstate System, America. In 1975, the United Nations Economic and Social Council’s Economic Commission for Europe ratified a document outlining international traffic arteries through Europe and beyond. Commonly known as E-Roads, these highways criss-cross Europe in much the same way that the Interstate system does the United States, but with even more roads and even longer routes.
