New Moscow Metro Diagram

Words cannot express how much I love this redesign of the Moscow Metro diagram. And this is the real thing, not a self-made project like my humble little offerings. It’s clean, stylish, informational and gorgeous. The repetition of the famous Circle Line at interchange stations is particularly nice.

Do yourself a favour and visit the design studio’s site for a closer look. The “Process” tab is especially worthwhile, as they run through the decisions that led to the final version in great detail. Also note that this took four years of work to get to this stage!

Bagel Time!

Really nice tiled typography, although it looks like there’s a misplaced tile on the “S” in “Noah’s”. Whoops!

The Story of InDesign’s Story Palette

Of all InDesign’s myriad of palettes and dialog boxes, none seem to come in for as much derision as this one:

Ridiculous or Ridiculously Powerful?

The humble Story palette.

An Open Letter to Guy Kawasaki on Spec Work

Or, sometimes 140 characters simply isn’t enough to express views properly.

Before we begin, let me unequivocably apologize for expressing the opinion in an earlier tweet to Guy that one of the final covers in his design contest was plagiarized from another source. This is not true, as the icon in question is in fact released under an open source license. However, whether it was ethical or proper of the designer to use this icon in said contest is something I’ll address later.

So, Guy Kawasaki has held his cover design competition and in a few days, the one lucky winner will be awarded $1000.

St. Johns Bridge

Here’s a new photo that I’m extremely happy with. The St. Johns Bridge is a beautiful gothic-styled bridge from the 1930s on Portland’s northern edge, and is something of a photography magnet. I’ve been drawn to it myself with some mixed results in the past, but this shot certainly hit the mark. I used my new 6xND filter to lengthen the exposure time up to 30 seconds, even though the sky was still quite bright: the sun had set, but that beautiful summer dusk was lingering on. The combination of that glorious purple gradient in the sky with the light streams left by vehicles on the bridge add up to a very satisfying shot.
