I’ve been showing teaser images of this project for a while now on Twitter, but I’m very pleased to announce that I’m now offering a range of carefully selected and lovingly restored vintage transit, railroad and highway maps in my shop as an historical complement to my own modern transit map designs. Check back often, as I plan on adding more maps in the near future!
Shop Vintage Posters – from $22
The maps have all been sourced from high resolution archives, including the Library of Congress, and are believed to be in the public domain. Restoration work that I have performed includes colour correction, discolouration and stain removal, deletion of tears and wrinkles, and in some instances, the seamless joining of two separate halves of a map. At the same time, I’ve attempted to preserve the “vintage” character of each map, as that’s a big part of what makes them so interesting and visually appealing. I like to call this approach “sympathetic restoration”.
A selection of maps currently for sale are shown in the gallery below. You can click through to view higher resolution versions of each map.
